PSW Jobs Tips - Tip #3 Always Send Resumes in .Doc or .PDF Format

PSW Jobs Tips - Tip #3 Always Send Resumes in .Doc or .PDF Format

Most PSW employers require applicants to send resumes in .doc (microsoft word) format and/or .pdf (adobe acrobat) format. For those without access to Microsoft Word there exists two free word processor alternatives. Both save in .doc and .pdf format. Select the software that will corresponds with your operating system (Windows or Mac).

Windows:

Open Office

Open office is a free software program that allows users to save and read .doc format files. It also includes programs similar to excel and powerpoint. To save as a .PDF click the icon that is located to the left of the print icon within the open office toolbar

Mac:

Neo Office

The best free software for the Mac is neo office. It is similar to open office but is native to Mac O/S. To save as a .doc file make sure to format as microsoft word or export as .doc. To save as a .pdf select save as .pdf file once in save mode or select the print button, then the drop down menu for save as .pdf

Tip: When in doubt send your personal support worker resume in both formats. If you are allowed to send only one choose .doc format.

PSW Jobs Tips - Tip #2 PSW Scope of Practice

PSW Jobs Tips - Tip #2 PSW Scope of Practice

On this website you will find numerous mentions of the PSW Scope of Practice. What exactly does this mean?

The scope of practice is outlined by a piece of legislation by the Regulated Health Professions Act of 1991. It was developed for use by Nurses and has been carried over into the personal support worker profession.

Here is a sample nursing scope of practice:

The practice of nursing is the promotion of health
and the assessment of, the provision of, care for, and
the treatment of, health conditions by supportive,
preventive, therapeutic, palliative and rehabilitative
means in order to attain or maintain optimal function.
(Nursing Act, 1991)

Along with this there is a set of controlled acts. I’m not going to get into this rather dry subject matter here. If you’re interested you can

To keep things simple, its best to assume that a PSW Scope of Practice Job will consist of tasks that you completed during your co-op training, along with doing things in a controlled and safe manner as outlined by your employee.

PSW Job Tips - Tip #1 First-Aid and CPR

PSW Job Tips - Tip #1 First-Aid and CPR

I’ve hand updated PSW Jobs for about a month and a half and I’ve begun to notice a few trends. We’ll take a brief look at each in this series of article entitled PSW Job Tips

Tip #1

Get your first-aid and CPR! In almost every single job ad that I see first-aid and CPR are a requirement. Don’t take yourself out of the market by not having these easy to obtain course accreditations.

The Canadian Red Cross offers combination First-Aid & CPR courses. I would recommend taking the Emergency First-Aid & CPR course. It’s considered a step up from a basic first-aid course. The emergency course is short (6.5 - 8 hours) and is usually completed in one or two days, depending on your schedule. Completion of the course will earn you a certificate that is valid for three years.

If you don’t have emergency first-aid take the short time to complete the course .It will greatly improve your chances at obtaining employment in the personal support worker field.
